"I like to spice up my neutral home with on-trend colours"
Merete broen, owner of Zen Interiors, lives with her family in a bright shoreline apartment on palm jumeirah.

"I work in the interior design industry and back when properties on Palm Jumeirah were released, my company designed around 40 of them. I really liked the look of them, so five years ago when my husband and I were starting a family, we decided to make Palm jumeirah our home. With playgrounds, parks and beaches nearby, it's ideal for bringing up little ones. "My style is very contemporary and simple. I like to use earthy and neutral tones as the main colours and then spice things up with whatever the colour of the year is. 2013 is all about emerald green and the added bonus of this is that it adds an outdoor feel, which is very important when living in an apartment. Another way I bring the outside into our home is to use elements such as shells, starfish and stones that we've collected from the beach. It reflects the seaside lifestyle of my family. "I get a lot of inspiration from travelling in Europe and the Far East. I also attend most of the furniture fairs and follow the latest trends and catwalk styles. "If I had to pick one room as a favourite it would be the living room because it's the heart of the home and the place where the whole family comes together. When I designed it, I wanted it to reflect solitude, calmness and peace, so I combined materials such as stone, wood and leather, and carefully put them together to achieve the right balance. The floor is solid teak and works perfectly to enhance the view of the beach from the balcony"
